IMI UK Conference

IMI UK's 1st International European & 7th National Conference took place in London on October 8th.  More than 250 participants filled the conference hall during clinical sessions, presentations on IMI's international projects, the intersection of Islam Ethics and modern medicine, and current Islamic awakening and our responsibility with a discussion on the dire human rights situation in Bahrain.  A financial management specialist was at hand, and workshops were conducted on professional development and time management. Special presentations on Tibb al-Imam Reza as well as a cake cutting ceremony were incorporated in honor of the wiladat of Imam Reza (A.S.) along with eloquent performances of naat and salaam.  Exhibits lined the conference hall along with the poster session that highlighted current research in a variety of fields from hematology to laparoscopic simulation models. Following the conference, the Banquet dinner was attended by conference participants and additional community members to support IMI UK as well as IMI's programs in Somalia and Pakistan.  The vision for IMI Europe was expounded and the new IMI UK Board of Directors and Advisors, as well as IMI's Europe Coordinator, were sworn in by IMI's Global President.   Details on the conference agenda as well as abstracts are available at http://imiuk.co.  A post-conference report shall be posted online shortly.

Aid for Somalia

With 2011 classified as the driest year on record in the eastern Horn of Africa, the health, livelihoods and food security of millions of Somalis, Ethiopians and Kenyans are at serious risk.  IMI has already acted upon its responsibility to provide help in the affected region.  IMI began collaborations with humanitarian organizations with local networks in August and is working with BETA Charitable Trust and cooperation for Health and Education Programs (CHEP) to provide assistance with food, water, and livelihoods development. Over the last seven weeks, CHEP volunteers personally reached over 11,666 households (89,929 individuals) in 37 villages and refugee camps, and dug shallow wells to provide access to cleaner water for use in farming activities as well.  IMI’s partnership with CHEP and BETA will provide immediate and long-term relief to those affected through continued food distribution and an increase in the rehabilitation of wells and support of livelihoods including farming activities.

IMI International Tobacco Taskforce: NEW SURVEY

IMI's International Tobacco Taskforce invites you to participate in a research project to study the general health and tobacco consumption behavior in the Shia community of North America. We are asking you (smokers AND nonsmokers in the US) to complete the following short questionnaire about your tobacco consumption and general health online.   It should take you only 5 minutes to complete. You must be at least 16 years of age to participate.

Through your participation, we hope to understand tobacco usage behavior and any correlating prevalence of chronic diseases in the American Shia Community. IMI TTF will share these results through published articles in scientific journals, conference presentations and online publications for a wide reach.  We do not know of any risks to you if you decide to participate in this survey but, we guarantee that your responses will not be identified to you personally. We promise not to share any information that identifies you with anyone outside our research group.  Finally, this survey is voluntary and we appreciate your honest participation. IMI in Somalia: Health, Livelihoods & Food Security

With 2011 classified as the driest year on record in the eastern Horn of Africa, the health, livelihoods and food security of millions of Somalis, Ethiopians and Kenyans are at serious risk.  While Somalia is considered the epicenter of the crisis, much of the country is still inaccessible to international organizations.  IMI began collaborating with local organizations in the region in August and continues to work with BETA Charitable Trust and Cooperation for Health and Education Programs (CHEP) to provide assistance with food, water, and livelihoods development. Over the last 7 weeks, CHEP volunteers have personally reached almost 12,000 households (approximately 90,000 individuals) in 37 separate villages and refugee camps.  Volunteers dug shallow wells to provide access to cleaner water for use in farming activities as well.  IMI's partnership with BETA Charitable and CHEP will provide immediate and long-term relief to those affected through continued food distribution, and increase in the rehabilitation of wells, and livelihoods development including farming support. The relief and recovery program targets not only the immediate malnutrition, but also provides a sustainable source for water and food, as well as income, for a healthier future.
